Hi Janine ... your post is a breath of fresh air! I am currently facilitating action learning sets for a group of health professionals at an NHS Trust (which is shortly due to come to an end) and would be very interested in learning more about how…

Hi Andy, Thanks for your reply. In the end I used a combination of Ai with SF questionning. Working in pairs, I put the participants into 4 groups where they asked their partner what was going well for them at work for them as individuals, their te…

Hi Pat, As soon as I read your first paragraph I thought "Appreciative Inquiry" - an approach that is very compatible with SF and shares a lot of assumptions, but explicitly foregrounds recognising, keeping and building on what is good in the old s…

About your connection to Solution Focused Work (based on Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer at BFTC Milwaukee and others):
Having worked for 35 years in the NHS I now work independently as a leadership trainer and coach, where my niche is maximising the leadership potential of health care professionals. I have used the SF model successfully on a 1:1 coaching basis and I'm now looking to use it within action learning sets. I'm looking forward to being a part of this group and to learn from others' experience of using SF in groups.

Hi Pat,
It's so nice to see your smiling face online!
Yep, I could not resist in the end...especially after I received an invitation to join the Italian SOL group!
How are you?
Are you still sure you cannot make the next session of the program in earl December or maybe there is chance I may get to see you soon? :-)

Love,
Bene

Hello Pat, Nice to hear from you. SF + ALSs, eh? Sounds good. I've found John Sharry's book 'Solution Focused Group Work' very helpful and he has a good chapter on SF group supervision which you might like. You've also obviously struck pay dirt, or done a great job with the commissioning conversation - with a Trust who can release its sisters for such a thing - rare in my opinion!
In supervision groups I usually do a Best Hopes exercise at the start, then teach some SF concepts, eg appreciation, looking for forward movement, scaling etc - also the idea of listening carefully to the person talking, not interrupting etc. Also careful timekeeping - often forgotten! I model the idea of being curious + SF questions, rather than giving suggestions or recommendations (sometimes hard for nurses who have been trained to 'fix' stuff).
The penny usually drops quite quickly and in some of my groups I can leave them to do it themselves - a permanent facilitator is a luxury!
All the best,
Carole
