Hi Coert!
Finally I am back in California and I have some time for myself.
I am reading the book "talent is overrated", that you mentioned in your blog posting. Pretty good, thanks for bringing that to my attention.
I liked the part where the author describes what deliberate practice is; the part where he describes Ericson's experiment in Berlin with the violin players; I also liked the distinction between "practice" and "deliberate practice" the author makes, supporting it with the fact about how experience does not add up to better performance.
I might be posting a brief comment about that article in my blog in the next few days, of course crediting you.
Frankly, I could have done without the part where he slams the concept of talent: I think he goes too far. And when authors introduce a new concept by blasting away current wisdom they expose themselves to the risk of being ridiculous: like when he tries to make the point that human abilities, not money, are the real asset now because banks and companies are awash in cash - something that read now makes you either laugh or cry, depending on your mood... :)
other than that, I think he is on to something important!!
Thanks again!!
Wishing you a great, happy and successful 2009,
ciao,
Paolo

PS: I was in Amsterdam Saturday, just connecting at Schipohl on my way to California...

Thanks a lot, Coert!
I was aware of Colvin's work, but I have not read his book; and I haven't gotten the latest Gladwell's book either.
To make a long story short, after checking out what you wrote, I now have both books in my amazon shopping cart.
Xmas break reading! :)

Thanks again for thinking about me in connection with those books.

Right now and up to Xmas I am very very busy with work (which is good), and very little is going on re my writing / research.
I will get back on it during Xmas time, and I might contact you again then for writing something together, if you are still interested.

Cheers,
ciao,
Paolo

Hi Coert!
Do not bother getting Kluge... I thought the book itself was a Kluge!
There are much better books on the design of the human mind and the quirks of our cognition: by Pinker, by Wilson, by Wegner, by Haidt...
I felt the book lacked focus.
Too bad...
cheers,
Paolo

Thanks Coert. Just finished two days facilitating a meeting of operations managers (who had never met in person) of an international high-tech company using solution-focused coaching techniques. No violence. Some agreements. Mostly smiles...must have worked for them :)
